Dispatches from the Distancing – Days 52 and 53

Bad eyes struck again last night!  I’m pretty sure I need a tune up on my prescription.  My eye doctor is now open (with precautions, of course) and I’m due for my yearly exam, but I think I’m going to put it off until June.  Oregon is still pretty much sheltering in place and our Governor is (thankfully) being very cautious.  But I just feel like things aren’t yet where they need to be for things to open.

In other excitement, there was a brutal murder in our garage today.  The mouse (er, mice…) finally found the Girl Scout cookies.  They had been in a wheel barrow, but Pat moved them into the house once he discovered on that had been eaten into.  A little later, I went out to get something out of the garage freezer and I saw something move out of the corner of my eye.  I wish I could say that I took this in stride, but I didn’t.  I didn’t just scream, I screamed, “EEEEK!”  Pat came to the rescue, wielding a broom.  I ran out of the garage but I heard him whacking the broom…and a few minutes later, he was done.

I’m pretty sure that was not the only mouse.  Pat did run out to get more traps, although I think we need something a bit more serious.  A friend sent me a link to a high frequency …thing…that is supposed to rid your house of pests, but I worry about what it might do to Alice.  I mean, she’s already neurotic enough.

I did sit down to vote after our Taco Tuesday/Cinco de Mayo dinner.  I’ve had my ballot for about a week, but  I just didn’t get around to it until now.  The Oregon Primary is pretty anti-climatic as it is so late in the general election season.  The nominees are usually already decided by now (as it is this year).  But, it’s done and now I just need Pat to do his ballot and I’ll run them over to the drop box.  I try not to be political here but I will say this: Oregon has been doing vote by mail for over 20 years and it is incredibly easy for voters, cheaper for the state, and more secure.  We also came to voting by mail pretty quickly (tl;dr version: in the 90s we needed to have a special election shortly after a general and we had the whole system up and running in about 6 weeks) so there is absolutely no reason that every state who does not currently use vote by mail can’t get it up in running in time for the general election.

School went well today–Chris got all of his work done without too much of a hassle and Lillie, of course, did all hers.  She’s now reading The Hunger Games and I feel like we’ve passed some big milestone–like YA Dystopia reading is a rite of passage.  I did worry if that subject matter was a bit too old for an eleven year old, but Lillie seems fine with it.

We are supposed to have a gorgeous weekend and Pat suggested going to the beach.  I had to nix that for 2 reasons:

1 – We are sheltering in place for a reason!

2 – Mother’s Day weekend is that absolute worst weekend to go to the beach.  We went a couple of years ago that you would have to park a mile down 101 to get to a beach!  I truly miss the beach–it’s one of my favorite places on the planet–and can’t wait to go back, but not this weekend!
