It’s a new year and it has been over 6 months since my last Weekly Reads post! I’m going to do my best to stay on top of this one in 2020, so let’s all cross our fingers!
As in the past, I am linking up with Kathryn at Book Date and her It’s Monday…What Are You Reading? hop for this post.
Don’t worry, I’m not going to go over all the books I’ve read since my last update (but, if you are interested, you can find me on Goodreads. Just leave me a note that you are coming over from the blog!). I’m only going to start from the beginning of the year. I made an effort to finish all my 2019 books in 2019 so that I could start 2020 with a fresh slate.
I have been able to do more reading than usual–our holidays have been quiet, which is just the way I like them! Plus, my cat Alice only wants to sit on my lap when I’m reading, so of course I have to indulge her! I’m hoping to get all the Christmas stuff put away and my house back in order today so that I don’t need to worry about that and can get back to life as normal.
What I finished this week:
Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston
This is one that I had been wanting to read but had to wait to finally reach the top of the holds list at the library. In the meantime, I had been hearing all sorts of raves about this book. Common sense would say that it would make me excited to read this. Unfortunately, it only made me nervous about reading it. When a book is so hyped, it almost becomes doomed to fail.
The good news is that this book was the rare case of living up to hype. It was a delightful new adult romance with well-written and nuanced characters. I also loved the world McQuiston created. I don’t know how accurate her depiction of the life of the First Family is, but I could believe it. I was less convinced of the Royal Family, but that was a small complaint with this book.
It’s a lighter book, but that’s okay. Sometimes you need something whimsical in your life!
Currently Reading:
- The Overdue Life of Amy Byler by Kelly Harms
- Honeybee by Trista Mateer (poetry)
- Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse (audiobook, re-read)
I’m glad the book lived up to the hype for you.
Wishing you a great reading week

I approach much-hyped books the same way. I’m always afraid they won’t match up to the expectation. I’ve been curious about Red, White & Royal Blue too. Requesting it at my library might give me a reason to stop in there. I’ve been concentrating of reading what I own. Come see my week here and Happy New Year!

I am glad you enjoyed Red, White & Royal Blue. I sometimes find myself avoiding highly hyped books. Other times I can’t wait to read them. There’s no rhyme or reason to it. I actually like it when I come across a dissenting opinion because it helps me reel in my expectations. I hope you are enjoying your current reads!

I am the same way with books that are raved about! Lol. I was really apprehensive about reading Where the Crawdads Sing, then I ended up loving it. I am glad that your book lived up to its reputation for you as well. 🙂
