Confession time: One of my goals for 2019 was to get back into my weekly reading update posts. Well, it’s now mid-May and I am finally getting my first such post up. As you can guess, New Year’s Resolutions are not my jam.
But, better late than never? In any case, I’m hoping to have these posts up almost weekly. I’ll schedule the posts for Sunday nights and will link up with Kathryn at Book Date and her It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? hop. So, here we go.
What I finished last week:
Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield
The Thirteenth Tale is my favorite novel, which would have been enough for me to pick up Once Upon a River. However, I heard (fortunately, before I read it) that Setterfield’s second book was no bueno, so I was a little apprehensive about this one. Fortunately, it was well worth it. I would say that it isn’t a read-alike to The Thirteenth Tale, but it is its own creature. If I had to slap a label on it, I think “fairy tale” might come closest, although that shouldn’t be a surprise given the title. This one is a must read.
Faith Unraveled: How a Girl Who Knew All the Answers Learned to Ask Questions by Rachel Held Evans
I’ve long been a fan of Rachel Held Evans for years. I own all of her books but, until last week, had only read one (although I lived on her tweets). When I heard the news of her tragic and untimely death, I was on a camping trip with my daughter’s Girl Scout Troop. I’m sure that everyone was tired of hearing me talking about her once I read the news, but that night I pulled up her first book (which I had not read, and was previously titled Evolving in Monkey Town) on my kindle and began to read.
While I enjoyed the previous book of hers that I had read (A Year of Biblical Womanhood), this one struck a deep chord with me. As someone who has question, doubted, accepted, and searched in my faith journey, this book spoke to me like few others have. And it made me mourn her death even more.
